Employee Training
Through the regularly scheduled employee training programs,
K&D keeps staff members and field personnel up-to-date on
current safety, state and federal environmental regulations,
accident prevention and new technologies in the industry. K&D
maintains complete records of training course attendance and
conducts regular medical monitoring of all field personnel.
Employee training programs prepare personnel for addressing
and responding to a wide range of customer needs including
emergency response, confined space entry, appropriate sampling
protocol and proper equipment operation.
Due to the high potential for injury from exposure to safety and health hazards at other plants, K&D has instituted a number of systems designed to reduce the potential for injury regardless of site conditions.
Branch Safety Coordinator
Each branch has assigned one management employee to
the position of Branch Safety Coordinator. The duties of the
Branch Safety Coordinator include overseeing the safety
efforts at the branch level, performing periodic job site inspec-
tions, enforcing safety policies and procedures, auditing safety
performance and arranging for or conducting safety training.
Safety Incentive Program
A safety incentives program has been implemented to
reward good safety practices. Each employee is awarded
points for hours worked safely, safety attitude and active pro-
motion of the safety program. Points are deducted for injuries,
vehicle accidents and attendance. Each quarter the points are
tallied and prizes are awarded.
Pre-job Safety Briefings
Prior to the start of each work activity, the Crew Leader or
Supervisor conducts a Pre-job Safety Briefing. This briefing
covers all the physical, chemical and natural hazards which the
crew might face during the performance of the work
activity. The Crew Leader documents this meeting on a Pre-job Safety Briefing form. Included on this form is a checklist
where the Crew Leader can "check-off" the hazards which
could be encountered and the appropriate protective measures. He then reviews the form with the crew.
Branch Safety Meetings
Branch safety meetings are held periodically. During
these meetings, various safety topics are covered, such as a
review of incidents which have occurred since the previous
meeting and safety issues of upcoming jobs. This opportunity
is also used to discuss operational issues.
Statistical Process Control and Tracking of Safety Improvement
In 1991, K&D implemented statistical process control
for tracking, forecasting and improving our safety record.
The following data is tracked and analyzed on a continual
basis: Number and Type of Incidents, Result of Incident,
Supervisor/Crew Leader in Charge, Number of Recordable
Injuries/Illnesses, Incident Frequency Trends, Incidents-to-
Hours-Worked Ratio, and Pareto Analysis of Incidents.
